Working in partnership with a confidential client, The Essex Partnership is directing the design, permiting, and construction of a “behind the meter†natural gas plant in Massachusetts. The facility will serve as a combined heat and power (CHP) resource significantly increasing overall energy efficiency for the host industries. The project will be designed to service electrical and heat loads for a major food distribution company and an existing chemical company with plans to expand output to service a future business park. In addition to improving energy efficiency, the project will significantly reduce the electrical and heating costs for the host facilities.
Combined Heat and Power technologies provide multiple economic and environmental benefits. CHP projects are becoming more common in industrial settings and other electrical and thermal load centers. The diagram below provides a comparison of convential and CHP electrical generation.
Additional information on the potential benefits of CHP are available from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Combined Heat and Power Partnership website.
