Agricultural Methane (Biogas) Program Expansion Study

June 1, 2010 by admin

Historically the capture of agricultural methane for electrical generation has not been economic for dairy farms with less than 500 head.  Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) asked The Essex Partnership to identify and evaluate options to allow and encourage participation in their existing “Cow Power” program by the many small dairy farms in Vermont.

Using data from the industry, equipment vendors, and existing/operating projects, Essex developed a powerful screening tool to quickly and effectively change key input variables and instantly obtain indicators of economic viability.  The tool was designed to evaluate a range of anaerobic digestion,  gas purification and end use scenarios. Essex is currently working with CVPS to perform more detailed feasibility assessment on the most promising alternatives.
